The V.M.C.C Magazine Book Review for ‘Motorcycle Repair and Upkeep’ Volume 1.
Classic Motorcycle Manuals have republished a whole range of books from the turn of the last century. Their excellent work has allowed those of us with an interest in motorcycle history to read about the pioneering days of riding and maintaining Vintage Motorcycles.
The latest project to come from the company is an excellent hardback book called ‘Motorcycle Repair and Upkeep’. The contents were published as a Series of 14 weekly parts around 1930, but are now reproduced in three books. See Also Volume 1 for JAP, Raleigh, Rudge Engines and Sturmey Archer Gearboxes and Volume 3 AJS, Ariel, BSA, Douglas, Matchless, P & M, Royal Enfield Engines and Burman Gearboxes
The complete set of 3 books gives useful information and photos on overhauling a number of marques of the period. Furthermore, details of various components such as Sturmey Archer & Albion Gearboxes and comprehensive timing charts are included.
The list of contributors includes many familiar names like WC Haycraft who went onto produce his own books. The layout of this is very similar to those and the Pitman books although the book is larger and the paper is far better quality.
Volume One Parts 1-4 of the original articles covers JAP, Levis, Rudge, Scott, Raleigh Engines and Sturmey Archer Gearboxes. The Book also includes articles on Brakes, Timing and Decarbonising plus a complete index. The pictures have been sharpened up and the excellent line drawings and diagrams are as good as the originals
